About the Walk/Run for Kids' Sake

Walk or run with your friends, family, club or corporate team, and help change the lives of Bay Area youth in need. Costumes encouraged in the spirit of Halloween.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area invites you to be a part of our 4th Annual Walk for Kids’ Sake. This year’s walk will be held in Oakland for the first time, to proudly spotlight and engage the East Bay community. Join us for a 5K fun run or pleasant 3-mile walk around Oakland’s beautiful Lake Merritt followed by a lakeside festival celebrating the East Bay, to benefit at-risk youth. All proceeds will support Big Brothers Big Sisters mission to provide 1-to-1 mentorship programs to children facing adversity, to change their lives for the better, forever.

About the Course

The Start and Finish Lines and Post-Race Festival will be at Lake Merritt Amphitheatre on Lake Merritt Blvd, between 12th Street and 1st Ave. The 5K course will be on paved path around the lake perimeter.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area

Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of the oldest, most respected youth-serving organizations in the country and has been changing kids’ lives for over 100 years. Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change kids’ lives for the better, forever. Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1958, Big Brothers Big Sisters has matched more than 11,000 Bay Area boys and girls with caring mentors. With a staff of 24 and offices in Oakland, San Francisco and Milpitas, we serve over 800 children each year across five countries: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Francisco. We provide the only year-round mentoring program for youth ages 6-18 in those countries. The vast majority of our participants are children of color from low-income families being raised by a single parent, foster parent or grandparent, and one in every five of our youth has at least one parent currently incarcerated. Our unique one-to-one mentorship approach has been shown to dramatically improve children’s confidence and school performance, and decrease their use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and violence.
